Kim Schafer began studying the carillon in college and went on to incorporate research on the instrument in her musicology PhD. After moving to Chicago, Kim researched the history of tower bells around the city and learned that many institutional leaders knew little about their bells and found many in disrepair. Through her bell research, she also strengthened her professional relationship with Jim Fackenthal, fellow Chicago carillonneur, and met innovative strategist and bell enthusiast Dan Frysinger. In November 2015, we hatched the idea to form Chicago Bell Advocates—an organization dedicated to advocating the good use and maintenance of bells in Chicago to strengthen institutions and communities. Since then, we have gradually gained clients throughout Chicago and the suburbs to promote institutional tower bells through repair, performance, and programming. In 2018, we changed our name to Community Bell Advocates, LLC to position ourselves to help others in the region and beyond.
