My tour of Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park, Illinois, started with this interesting tidbit—the inside of the church was used in the filming of Home Alone(!) Dr. Dennis Northway, the Parish Musician and my gracious host, explained that the scenes which featured Macaulay Culkin entering the church and sitting next to the creepy neighbor guy were filmed there. The sanctuary, especially the stained glass windows, are exquisite!
But we’re here for the bells, right? The specs: ten bells cast by Meneely of Watervliet in 1922. Range from D to E.
Look at those super shiny brand new bells!
And here’s the playing console itself.
Notice the latch so that you can hold down either the C or C-sharp so you won’t play the wrong accidental? Love it.
I was too chicken to climb the very wobbly stairs to see the bells themselves.
Writing on the door to the console room showing the names of the chimers who rang the bells for the nation’s sesquicentennial in 1976. (We need to do this for every Independence Day!)
And a video of me playing a little tune.
Thanks, Grace Episcopal Church and Dennis, for letting me visit your church and chime!
